MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT

I am fortunate to serve as the president of MSELA this year. It is humbling for me to follow a long tradition of dedicated and well-known science educators who have held this position. We, in the science education community, are indebted to those who served before. Their contributions over the years have advanced the cause of science education both here in Massachusetts and in the nation as well. To all who have served in leadership roles in M.A.S.S. and in M.S.E.L.A, I say, "Thank You". I hope that you will continue to offer your counsel, your experience and your leadership to this organization.

Here in Massachusetts and across the country science education is changing. The No Child Left Behind legislation continues to affect curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. In our own state the science MCAS will soon become part of the graduation requirement for all of our public school students. Science education leaders are working to ensure that curricula are aligned with state frameworks and that students are successful on these state assessments.

It is my hope that we can set an agenda for MSELA this year that will allow this organization to serve as a resource to its members and to the science education community at large. The executive board has committed to finding avenues by which to provide information and networking to science education leaders in Massachusetts. This year we will take the first steps toward those goals. We will also continue the working relationship we have with MAST so that together we can continue to advance the cause of science education in our state.

I look forward to an exciting year for MSELA. I hope that you will share your thoughts and suggestions with me and with other members of the executive board as we endeavor to serve you, the science education leaders in Massachusetts.
